Password Protect a PDF
Add a password to open a PDF and choose what readers may do: print, copy text, edit or fill in forms.
About this tool
The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest level in the PDF standard, supported by Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, web browsers and most readers. Without the password the content cannot be read. You can also leave the open password empty and only restrict printing, copying or editing.
The owner password lets you lift those restrictions later; if you leave it empty, a random password is used. Encryption happens entirely in your browser: neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere. Keep your password safe, as it cannot be recovered.
- AES-256 encryption supported by common PDF readers
- Password to open and owner password
- Permissions: printing, copying, editing, forms, comments
- Option to restrict without an open password
