How to play sudoku
- The grid. A classic sudoku has 9 rows, 9 columns and 9 boxes of 3×3 cells outlined by a thick line. A few digits are already placed: these are the clues.
- The only rule. Fill every empty cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each digit appears only once in every row, only once in every column and only once in every box.
- No maths. The digits are just symbols: you could play with 9 colours or 9 letters. You never add anything up.
- Method one, start from a cell. Pick an empty cell and rule out the digits already in its row, its column and its box. If only one is left, that is the answer: see the example.
- Method two, start from a digit. Take a digit, say 5, and look at a box where it is missing: often the 5s in the neighbouring rows and columns leave it only one possible cell.
- Never guess. A good grid has a single solution that you reach by logic alone. Every grid from this generator is checked.
To learn, start with a 4×4 grid or an easy 9×9 and tick “Show possible digits”: every empty cell then shows the digits still allowed. The “Hint” button places a digit and explains why.
About this tool
Every grid is built on demand and then checked: it has a single solution that you reach by logic. The level is graded by the techniques actually needed: cells with one possible digit for Easy, forced placements for Medium, locked digits and pairs for Hard, and very few clues for Expert. Four sizes are available, from 4×4 for children to the giant 16×16, plus the diagonal variant.
Online, you play with the keyboard or by touch, with a notes mode, possible digits on display, mistake checking and hints that explain their reasoning. To print, gather your grids in “My sudokus”, in series and with progressive difficulty, then download a vector PDF: 1, 2, 4 or 6 grids per page, solutions grouped at the end, numbered pages, a title page and KDP sizes for your own puzzle books.
