About this tool
The tartan generator lets you compose a plaid thread by thread, like a weaver: each stripe has a colour and a thread count, and the render imitates the real 2/2 twill weave where warp and weft threads cross diagonally.
Write the threadcount in weaver’s notation (for example R8 K2 G24 Y4) or build it stripe by stripe with colours and thread counts. The sett can be symmetric, mirrored like most tartans, or not, and the weft can differ from the warp. Start from a preset, let the tool invent a tartan, then export a seamless tile or a large image.

Frequently asked questions
What does “R8 K2 G24” mean?
It is weavers’ notation: a colour letter followed by a number of threads. R8 means 8 red threads, K2 two black threads, G24 twenty-four green threads.
What is a symmetric tartan?
The threadcount is mirrored around its first and last stripes. That is the case for the vast majority of tartans.
Are the presets clan tartans?
No, they are original setts created for this tool, to give you a starting point.
Is the render true to real fabric?
It reproduces how threads cross in a 2/2 twill; real shades depend on the yarns and dyes used by the weaver.
